It all started with a quote…
“In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks.” John Muir
This is the quote that got me going. First let me introduce myself, my name is Travis Bennett, and I have found the benefit of being outside and I love it. I’m hooked and I can’t stop. I’m always thinking about it, planning for the next weekend trip.
This was not always easy for me, not too long ago I was diagnosed with multiple digestive health issue (crohn’s and IBS) and was keeping me from working for months on end. And In that boredom, I found my escaped through documentaries and unfortunately YouTube. I was constantly watching anything, and everything I could on getting outside and hiking or camping. The more I researched, I was getting more and more intrigued.
Now with my health, I couldn’t just go and start doing this stuff. I had to start it off very slowly. Light walks around a park, preferably something scenic with water. Gradually over time, I started to notice that I was moving better, sleeping better. And to me, sleeping was a big thing for me. I always had a hard time sleeping, but after a long good hike, I’m so beat, I just want to go to sleep. I defiantly noticed I have more focus when I am outside. Disconnecting myself from the everyday items, such as my phone, car, internet, electricity and people, really makes a difference and when you do meet people out on the trails, its just, different. I feel hikers move at a different pace, a pace with no rush. You are out there to enjoy it and soak it up.
Don’t get me wrong, I still get some bad days, and lets say some worse days for me, but I’m doing my best between a healthy diet and doing more things with nature.Thankfully, as time went by, I started to notice my health was starting to improve and I was able to do more. When I started to see that, it got me even more excited. So, I started moving to more off-road trails. Nothing to hard at this point, but still trying to challenge myself. Now, I’m not saying that this will change everyone’s life. What I can say, it has made a huge impact on mine. And as long as I’m able, I will be spending as much time as I can outside.
